Patz & Hall Chardonnay
For more than three decades, Patz & Hall has occupied a special place among California’s elite Chardonnay producers. Founded in 1988 by Donald Patz, James Hall, Anne Moses, and Heather Patz, the winery built its reputation not through vast estate holdings, but through long-standing relationships with some of the finest vineyard owners in Sonoma County and beyond. Long before vineyard-designated wines became fashionable, Patz & Hall was showcasing the unique personalities of celebrated sites such as Hyde Vineyard, Durell Vineyard, Gap’s Crown Vineyard, Dutton Ranch, and Zio Tony Ranch.
The Sonoma Coast bottling serves as the winery’s flagship regional Chardonnay, drawing fruit from an impressive collection of premium vineyard sites. The 2021 blend incorporates grapes from eighteen carefully selected vineyard blocks, including multiple sections of Dutton Ranch, along with fruit from Sanchietti Vineyard, Gap’s Crown, Zio Tony Ranch, Parmelee-Hill Vineyard, and the renowned Durell Vineyard. Many of these vineyards are capable of producing outstanding single-vineyard wines on their own, yet together they create a Chardonnay that captures the broader character of Sonoma Coast while retaining remarkable complexity.

The winery’s Chardonnay program follows a distinctly Burgundian approach, including whole-cluster pressing, native yeast fermentation, extended lees aging, French oak maturation, and bottling without filtration when possible. Their stated goal is richness without heaviness and complexity without sacrificing vineyard expression.

Patz & Hall Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2021
This is not a lean, austere Chardonnay modeled after Chablis. Instead, it proudly embraces California’s tradition of richness while avoiding the excesses that once defined the category. It occupies an appealing middle ground—more restrained and balanced than some of the heavily oaked, buttery styles of years past, yet fuller and more opulent than many of today’s minimalist expressions. Chardonnay lovers who appreciate producers such as Kistler, Ramey, Far Niente, or Aubert will find much to admire here.
This wine was assembled from 18 premium vineyard blocks across the Sonoma Coast. In the glass, it is a pale lemon yellow. Aromas of ripe peach, honeydew melon, and Meyer lemon emerge on the nose.
The palate delivers a luxurious texture without becoming heavy. The lemon blooms as bright acidity. providing freshness and structure. There is just a hint of butter, and it all wraps up in a long, energetic finish. ABV is 14.5%.
